dwell on design: casa cuadrada

The third of four homes I’m featuring from my trip to LA last year is one of my favorite houses. I love looking at these photos over and over again. The Dwell on Design home tours are a two day event, approximately 6 homes on each day scattered throughout the Los Angeles area. It was one of the most inspirational experiences I have had during my design career and regrettably, only did the Saturday tour. Regardless, I saw some amazing homes. You can see the first two homes I featured here and here.

Perched on a hill, you can barely see this home from the street. After walking up the steep driveway I was greeted by the most incredible lemon trees. It was a welcome indeed and they set the stage for what was inside. Whimsical, personal, and confident with colour, pattern and texture, this home respects family heirlooms, art and mid-century modern furnishings. It’s fabulous and I want to live here!

The homeowners, architect Tom Marble and artist Pae White, embrace a modernism that honours tradition and history.

Collected knick-knacks, bright walls and furniture, mixed with artistic curation and illustrations by White, add a warmth and wonder to this home. With a central courtyard, each room is filled with natural light and cross breezes.

I absolutely love this design style. Mixing modern and traditional, old with new, colour, texture, art and collectibles. It shows personality and warmth while appreciating modern design and paying homage to the past.

Why don’t we all meet out in the backyard and gather around the upholstered ottomans, sip lemonade and admire the view. *sigh*

    I. Love. This. House. For a home tour, it really speaks to me. I guess it’s the modern aesthetic paired with its casualness that really makes me adore this place. I strive for this exact mix in my home and will definitely be inspired by this post for a very very long time.

“Whimsical, personal, and confident with colour, pattern and texture…” from the moment I read this, I just knew I would love this home tour. And guess what? I did. All that colour…it just calls out to me so much.
